"And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will have you become fishers of men.’"

Context and Meaning of Mark 1:17

1. The Setting (Mark 1:14-20)

This verse occurs at the beginning of Jesus' ministry. After John the Baptist is arrested, Jesus begins preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God (Mark 1:14-15), calling people to repentance and faith. As He walks along the Sea of Galilee, He sees Simon (Peter) and Andrew, two fishermen, casting their nets.

2. The Call to Discipleship (Verse 17)

Jesus calls them with the powerful statement:
"Follow Me, and I will have you become fishers of men."
