The Fruits of the Spirit in Scripture

One of our favorite passages discussing the fruits of the Spirit is Galatians 5:22-23. This passage contrasts the works of the flesh (sinful nature) with the Spirit-led life of a believer.

1. The Fruits of the Spirit

📖 Galatians 5:22-23 (NASB 1995)
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."

🔹 These nine attributes are evidence of a believer who is actively seeking to walk by the Holy Spirit. They reflect Christ-like character.

2. Walking by the Spirit (Context of Galatians 5:16-26)

📖 Galatians 5:16-17 (NASB 1995)
"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, in order to keep you from doing whatever you want."

🔹 Living by the Spirit means seeking God to transform our character.

📖 Galatians 5:24-25 (NASB 1995)
"Now those who belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let’s follow the Spirit as well."

🔹 Being led by the Spirit means surrendering our old sinful nature and embracing our daily walk with God.

✅ Jesus’ Teaching on Bearing Fruit
📖 John 15:4-5 (NASB 1995)
"Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing."

🔹 The source of spiritual fruit is seeking Christ—staying connected to Him through faith, obedience, and prayer.

✅ God Desires Good Fruit
📖 Matthew 7:17-18 (NASB 1995)
"So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit."

🔹 This passage is about wisdom and discernment. Understanding that not everyone who says Lord, Lord is sent from Him. Pay attention and guard your spirit from false teachers. 

✅ The Fruit of Righteousness
📖 James 3:17-18 (NASB 1995)
"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, free of hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."

🔹 Spiritual fruit is not just personal; it impacts how we treat others with peace, mercy, and righteousness.
